In the quest for better health, many people turn to doctors, trainers, self-help books or herbal supplements. But they overlook a powerful weapon that could help them on their quest for better health: their friends.

Friendships give you a sense of belonging and purpose, boost your happiness, reduce stress and make life a heck of a lot easier.

Though some of us are natural loners, most of us depend greatly on the company of true friends. As with any relationship, friendships bring support and joy and occasionally strife. The conventional wisdom is that we choose friends because of who they are but it turns out that we actually love them because of the way they support who we are.

One of my best girlfriends Janice and I met through a mutual friend years ago. We bonded instantly and even though we were both friend’s of someone else we knew we were somehow meant to be besties. I do believe she was quoted simply saying “I like you, let’s be friends”. Thus, a friendship was born! More than 20 years later and across the miles, she still gets me. And it feels good.

I’ve been through some pretty dark times in my life and some absolutely vibrant ones. Some parts are still shady. Whatever the colour I know I am eternally grateful that I’m surrounded by some truly beautiful people.

I’m indebted to them in so many ways.

  • For inspiring me. You are brave and astonishing. Thank you.

  • For letting me be broken. They don’t try to fix me. They love me just as I am.

  • For thinking of me. All of my friends have crazy lives and their own sh*t to deal with, yet somehow they still find a way to make me feel important.

  • For telling me the truth, at all costs and even if it’s ugly. You’re the best friends and I cherish you.

  • For listening to me. Even if at times it sounds like a broken record. You bring me so much comfort.

  • For failing me. If they were just a little more perfect, I would have tried to be perfect too. And I would have failed. Thanks for being exquisitely flawed.

  • For making me laugh. There is no better medicine.

Good friends are good for your health. Fortunately, I’ve been blessed in the friendship department. Some are for a season and some are for a lifetime, but either way, I’m grateful that I’ve never been without. In each season of life I’ve been richly blessed with exactly what I needed when it comes to the people who journey through life with me.
